Cardiff Animation Festival 2024 Highlights!

It's been a good number of years since I attended an festival in it's entirity, and I'm so glad I did! I haven't felt this inspired and motivated in a while.

Cuphead - For the Love of 2D animation

Tina Nawrocki, responsible for animating and designing way too many characters for the game, including Baroness Von Bon Bon and The Howling Aces, gave an inspiring behind-the-scenes talk. What impressed me most, was not only how much love and dedication she put into the project, it was just how much research went into the character designs and how it just elevated them "pretty good" to "unforgettable" . Having recently entered the world of 2D animation and character design for video games, I will definitely taking her advice on board for future projects.

The Evolution of Golden Wolf

While Golden Wolf's work is beyond impressive, and indeed the story of their humble beginnings to the global reputation they rightfully have today is absolutely inspiring, it was hearing about the way they run the studio that had me smiling the most. Allowing positivity to influence creativity, not restricting their staff to a rigid animation pipeline, and allowing each person the freedom to experiment find their own unique way of solving any problem. The way every studio should be.

Wallace & Gromit in the Grand Getaway - VR Experience

I rarely get the chance to play with VR. This was such a charming experience. The plasticine textures were spot on, it really felt like I had been shrunk down and placed into the little sets. I accidentally quit out of the game and had to restart, so I didn't get as far as I would have liked. Maybe next time

Quick Draw

The film Erin Urdahl and I made as part of the Quick Draw 48 film challenge was screened at the festival, so of course I couldn't pass up the chance to see it on the big screen. Really I want more of my stuff be shown at festivals now.

Films of noticeable notability

There were so many amazing films. A few shorts that really grabbed me were I'm Leaving by Michelle Brand, Mee and Bird by Greg McLeod, Spectre of the Bear by Josh Hicks, Sandwich Cat by David Fidalgo, A Kind of Testament by Stephen Vuillemin, and Offerlamm by Tova Persson.
Feature films, Chicken for Linda and Robot Dreams were definite highlights.

And of course all the amazing people I met. Such a lovely bunch with so much to share. Had an absolute blast hanging out with every single one of them.

The Cardiff Animation team as always, did an amazing job. Can't wait for the next one! I'll be there.

Cardiff Quick Draw, Round 1.25!

Nearly four years ago, I entered the Quick Draw challenge with a small team of extremely talented people, to make an animated short in just 48 hours (I believe the theme was "regrowth"). After helping plot out the idea and some initial concept art, I had to drop out early on due to unforeseen circumstances. The rest of the team did an outstanding job finishing the film without me, but I've always regretted not seeing it through to the end. This year, I decided I was going to try again, and I'm glad I did.

This year's theme was "treat," and I don't think either me or my team mate Erin Urdahl could have been given a more inspiring prompt. Erin, with her years of carnie experience, pitched an idea based on a concept by 2nd-generation carnival extraordinaire, Wayne McKay. We had the idea planned out in 10 minutes, the storyboard finished within 45, and for the next 47 hours and 15 minutes we gradually brought this quirky (and admittedly messed up) idea to life.

We managed to meet the deadline with just 5 minutes to spare, and I'm so proud of what we accomplished. I couldn't have done this without Erin, who despite having absolutely no animation experience, turned out to be a natural. She jumped into designing, puppet crafting, sound sourcing, providing motivational support, and even animating for the first time in her whole life with such excitement and enthusiasm, and did such an outstanding job.

She wants to do it again and so do I. Despite all the stress, the time zone difference between us, and it almost looking like we weren't going to make the deadline, we actually had a lot of fun. Erin wants to learn more animation. She's hooked!

All the films will be screened online on Wednesday 17th at 8pm via the Cardiff Animation Festival YouTube Channel, as well as a live screening at the Cardiff Animation Festival near the end of April. Maybe you'll see me there.

Personally, I can't wait.

Farewell Foolish Mortals

It's been a wild ride, but I've finally wrapped up work as a character animator on up coming, point and click adventure game, Foolish Mortals. Absolutely, the most enjoyable project I've ever had pleasure of working on. I had no idea just how far reaching and amazingly recieved this game would be when I first started. A huge thank you to Jammy Custard Animation for allowing me to be a part a project I'll always be proud of.

I really hope I get the opportunity to work on more games in the future, and I can't wait to play the finished game.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board (Welsh version)

Earlier this year I worked with Jammy Custard Animation on a video for the Aneurin Bevan Health Board explaining their new Dementia Friendly Hospital Charter to patients and their families.
I had the pleasure of working on the Welsh lip-sync and subtitles, despite not being a Welsh speaker. It was tough, but I definitely enjoyed the experience.

Back once again with more Sasquatch T-shirts

The wonderful people at Camp Stidwell in Idaho commissioned me for a second time to design some Sasquatch t-shirts and stickers for this year's girl scouts day camp.

Meanwhile, last year's designs continue to spread, far across the Pacific Northwest!

Foolish Mortals Trailer Finally Released!

I was honoured to be asked by Jammy Custard studios to work as a character animator on the upcoming point and click adventure game, Foolish Mortals.

Coming 2023 to Switch, Steam and iOS.
